So it's Valentine's Day 2011 in Philadelphia and I just took a girl out to a nice dinner at my favorite sushi place. Afterwards we decided it would be fun to go get a couple drinks somewhere but seeing as how I didn't know the area very well I called up a local buddy and asked him to recommend a place. He says, "Go to the Arts Garage you'll have a blast." So I take his advice, plug it into the GPS and we head over. We pay our cover and head upstairs. I immediately realize that my buddy was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around with us because we are the only two white people in a crowd of over 100 black people on open mike night. This in itself doesn't bother me. I've got black friends. I love hip hop music and if I was by myself I'd feel right at home but not two minutes after walking in the door the MC starts to heckle us over the mike, "Yo bouncer who let these crackas in here? All the nice places closed Charlie Brown? etc. etc." Naturally my girl is beginning to feel uncomfortable so I quickly down three gin and tonics, turn to her, and whisper "watch me turn these lemons into lemonade." With a comfortable buzz I head over to the MC. "Whatchoo want white boy?" he asks. "How about letting me get up on stage?" I say. He tries to dissuade me. Says I don't know what I'm getting into but I finally convince him.
